For some reason, I keep thinking of this song: "99 Luftballoons" cos the singer's voice was kinda strong and interesting. Anyone heard of it before? www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN3itLN57R4

Regrettably ;D
This and the English version - 99 Red Balloons - were major hits in the 80s for Nena, the very definition of a one-hit wonder.
I was never really a fan.

I prefer the German version over the English. It doesn't sound nowhere as forced.
Great song by Nena.

Ah man, I used to love that song when I was little. It is one of those songs you can only hear a couple times a year without wanting to kill people, but I love it.

Actually, Nena was only a OHW out of Germany... in Germany she tortures us to this very day! And I don´t know what we did to own that... being german and all, I naturally hate that song she easily falls under the category of "Schlager", what would be "Beater" in translation but since that makes no sense, I´d translate it with oldfashion-people over 30 yrs love it- kind of music... (it´s a bit like the country obsession in the US, where we all were punished with knowing songs like "Achy Breaky Heart") Little side anecdote - Nena was famous for having an embarassing incident in TV in the 90´s where someone told her that not shaving ones armpits is pretty out of fashion...... furthermore is Nena one of the favorite artists of (similar anoying german) Bill from Tokio Hotel. The only version of that song that doesn´t make me instantly sick is the one from Goldfinger, awww the 90s. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzpijLuO5qs

Personally, I loved this song ! But - I also grew up with my music tastes during the 80s ... Nena was kind of a teenager's dream/star during the early 80s.
