It's said that those who need to write up on huge articles, that require a lot of specific research and data, often use Microsoft Excel to input all that data. My question is: anyone knows how they do it and how they organise their data? I've found one to two example sites but gah... it can be hard to find a suitable link when every link goes to some darned computer site or business site. I know this one supposedly should go into the Writing forum but it's not really about writing and more about technical organisation. Sooo... *confused*

Excel has the advantage of being a ton of squares rather than lines, so it's great to create all tables, graphs, etc. Once they are done, you can simply copy them from Excel and paste them into Word as an object - a graphic file. Done this a few times

Can you be more specific chicken man? EKs right though, I had to write a 25 page research paper (it ended up being 32 pages) for my masters class...I had lots of graphs and charts, all made in excel. You can even use excel for colors and borders, font style etc, it all transfers to Word.

Well, it's more like... I've heard of people using Excel to organise lots of text. How do they do that?

"Access" is a better program to organize data, and easier to use if you ask me. But I don't know if it still exists though

There's software made just for writing organization that might be more user-friendly, like Liquid Story Binder by Black Obelisk Software. If you keep an eye open for it, you can find offers for it free eventually (it was at giveawayoftheday.com a few months ago).

Thank you for all the suggestions. I took a look at the writing software suggested... errr WOW, that's some very advanced writing stuff. Hey Elliot, how do you organise your writing? Excel, eh?
