But he said it first - BINGO! This one is on display at the Berlin Technical museum's outdoor park, and it's one of the oldest from the Northern German region - which makes it several hundred years old (talk about solid construction!). Actually it can be manually (one-man-ually!!!) turned into the wind with a beam, as it rests on a pivot.

A windmill sounds right.
How about a drawbridge?
EDIT: Whoops... Missed this page.

Solid construction an very good wood for it not to be completely rotten... Philosophic question; if you build a ship but end up replacing all of its materials, is it the same ship anymore? Was it used for grain?

There are several windmills in Belgium and Holland as well and yes, most of them were used for grain. I don't know if there are other uses for a windmill though?

Hmm... how do you produce grain using a windmill?

Well, not to produce it, but to crush it to make flour?

Aha! So that's where the name came from!!!
Windmill: to harness the power of the wind to mill the grain into flour! ;D

tp explain the working of a windmill, check this page. If you need to know more about it, let me know. Basically, the wind makes the arms go round, the arms are attached to a mechanism inside the mill, that makes round stones (millstones) turn and the grain falls in between the stones and gets crushed into flour.
There are also other types of windmills, like the newer ones that are used to get electrical energy.

I don't know if there are other uses for a windmill though? Oh yes - especially in the Netherlands - the low lands - the force of the (continuously blowing) wind was used to pump water to drain the low lying lands - strictly speaking, they should have been called wind pumps there. There may have been combinations though - where the turning momentum of the millstones (grinding stones) was further transmitted to pumps. The one I pictured was indeed used to grind grain to flour - and it was an 'inland' mill, hence the ability to turn it into changing wind directions. To the question whether the change of each and every part changes the thing - I would say no, if it is an identical replacement. It'd still be the same design and function. In the course of normal maintenance one would indeed replace and/or refurbish the majority of parts in anything. In reality though, a lot of times one does not only replace with identical parts, but with improved parts or functions - this then is the from restoration to evolution (development).

Yeah... I came to wonder if my question about grain was silly, after a few minutes. Lol. So, when it's a windpump, it looks like you indeed can produce grain with a windmill! Windmills are something that I don't think we have here except maybe on some islands on the St-Lawrence... We have a lot of (water)mills, but most are about woodwork. However, when I think windmill, it's Don Quixote that comes to my mind. ;D It looks like THD needs another reminder. ;D
