Ooops oops... remind me to type this when I'm more awake.
Actually, I'd in mind from 20s to 70s but... come to think of it, what ancient songs are there? Hmmm...

Best groups/singers I know of from the 60s & 70s (Ignoring the obvious): Abba, The Monkees, The Cars, Don McClean. Best from earlier in the 20th century: Mario Lanza, Noel Coward (Composer), Ivor Novello (Composer), Rogers & Hammerstein (Composers), Rogers & Hart (Composers), Frankie Laine. 19th century: Gilbert & Sullivan. Before 19th century: Greensleeves (Song, believed to be written by Henry VIII, king of England) If you want popular rather than classical music, that should do it

- He ain't heavy, he's my Brother by Herman & The Hermits - A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Roll Over Beethoven - Jonny B. Goode - Hotel California - The Year Of The Cat - The Chain by Fleetwood Mac - What A Wonderful World, the best song *ever* ! - Davy's On The Road Again by Manfred Mann and his band (okay, I've been infected by my parent's love for this band ...)

Alrik; Nice choices, my parent's influence mans I can't escape a week without hearing one of those. It's a shame about Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" I was playing it in the common room the other day, and no one knew what it was untill the solo near the end. Because it's the F1 theme ;-; It makes me sad that there are so many good bands, [old and new] that just aren't appreciated enough. It also seriously worries me when I know how many bands are out there, and how many hours of music there is, and how I will never get to listen to it all. I have to say though; The Walker Brothers [their stuff seems to be lost] The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost that Loving Feeling Chicago - If you leave me now I have too many to write down but tinyurl.com/nmdyjbAnything of that album, or the 2nd or 3rd volume is good. I have the first volume. It's kept me company on many a long car journey to visit relatives. *sighs*

Yes, there's definitively a shift of of generations.
Only the "true classics" will survive.
Same with contemporary songs.
Besides, for researching songs and albums I usually use a mixture of Amazon + Wikipedia, cross-checking everything.
Amazon often lists special releases without them being available, and Wikipedia often doesn't - it's usually fan work to sort the things out (especially single releases etc.).
What makes me really angry are record companies not releasing older stuff. Rumors say that there is an album by the German electronics group called "Kraftwerk" not on CD even today.
