As I am happy to expand my music knowledge and collection, I am always open for new sorts of music. One genre which I barely know anything of is the good old country music. Ofcourse I know the general sound and feeling the music has. And on the rare occasion a country song plays on the car radio, I really like driving to it. It gives me the feeling of being back on holiday in America again (well duh!) and I have to say that is one of the best feelings you can give me. So why shouldn't I try to get to know a bit more about country music? I have already found some local country radiostation that I'll try out listening to. But I always like to get to know a few artists myself. I am 19 years old, open to every music and I couldn't care less if certain sorts of music aren't "young" or "cool" or "good" enough for other people (in fact I have been on the brink of killing people who proclaim such things). But I barely know a thing about country music (I thought there was also something like country&western, right? ^^), so if anyone has any tips on where to start with this genre, the "best" artists, the "classic" songs etc., I'd be happy to hear them. I think I will mainly listen to it while driving.

Well, right now you can laugh at anyone who says Country is for old people and say "You DO know who Taylor Swift is right? Biggest selling artist in the US last year?" She's brought Country back into the mainstream - and to a younger audience.
Of course, she's also where my own interest in Country begins and nearly where it ends ;D
I know names. I couldn't say how good they are:
Alan Jackson Garth Brooks Billy Ray Cyrus (Yes, Miley's dad) Pat Cash Faith Hill Dolly Parton

The only thing that's keeping me from looking up some Taylor Swift music again is the overzealous members of her religion

Most people don't like Country, Hildor. It's perfectly normal! I can't stand most of it myself. If it were not for you-know-who I'd have no real interest at all...

Well, the problem is the stereotype about country(country = dull or old-fashioned) and that a good deal of country's subject material is a bit more "archaic" than "modern".

I think the problem is you can only listen to so many people singing about how their other half has shot their pickup truck and run off with their horse before you want to strangle someone. Which is pretty much traditional Country. It's all 'S/he did me wrong and I'm gonna cry about it for the rest of this song'.
It gets very old after about, oh, the first time you hear it ;D
'New Country' - of whom Taylor is the greatest exponent - is more varied and often even upbeat, so a lot of traditional Country fans hate it - and her in particular, of course! ;D

Ethnic music? Which types? Do you mean "ancient music" or something else? Things like ... The Chieftains, for example, or of the Realworld label, sometimes (although they mix into pop music quite often there - a *very* interesting approach, sometimes !). Or things from the ARC label. www.arcmusic.co.uk/index.php?language=en Excellent stuff ! I have a few CDs from them !
