Unfortunate time for it. It can't be far off D3's release date.
That said - who knows? May still do well.

Seriously? I thought D3 was supposed to later this year?
Ah well - never mind, then! GOOD timing if that's the case!

Seriously? I thought D3 was supposed to later this year? No way!!! Blizz already gone on record, saying D3 will be after Starcraft 2. And Starcraft 2 was recently said to be not even half-done. Let me see if I can find those links. Pretty sure it was on Shacknews.

Gah! Thanks, D! I'll have to put my D3 expectations down to wishful thinking then, it seems!
In that case, Torchlight may do very well from frustrated gamers who want something to tide them over for the next couple years... ;D

Thing is, Torchlight SP is dropping at a bad time against other RPG's and action-RPG's -- Fall 2009. IT's going to be hectic w/ RPG's, for sure. Sept = MMO month -- DDO Unlimited (FREE!); Champions Online; Aion. October releases -- Venetica (I think); Borderlands; Risen. November -- Dragon Age: Origins. December -- Divinity 2. At least Torchlight SP be budget-priced, though -- at $20. So, that might be a good move. Also, besides RPG's and action RPG's galore -- there's other big franchise name games dropping this Fall, too -- Assassin's Creed 2; Left 4 Dead 2 (Nov 19th); and of course the behemoth Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Gah! Thanks, D! I'll have to put my D3 expectations down to wishful thinking then, it seems! In that case, Torchlight may do very well from frustrated gamers who want something to tide them over for the next couple years... ;D I think the game looks like a nice Mythos and Diablo type of action-RPG. Some of the Flagship guys are now at Runic (who worked on HGL and the Diablo-like game Mythos, which Hanbit took over) and also some of the Ex-Blizzard Diablo guys, they're now at Runic Games. Also, I should note -- Torchlight MMO is also planned, at some date. It'll be FREE-to-play. I think there will be microtransations, if you want extra content -- which is the new business model DDO is going for.

Basic free, pay for more seems to be slowly getting popular from the little I know of MMOs - certainly amongst those who don't see themselves seriously competing with WoW. It's an interesting approach and I can see it working pretty well.
That is indeed a very good price for a new game, especially in a recession! Good thinking on that one.

It's an interesting approach and I can see it working pretty well. Blizz has even considered thinking of possibly switching to that business model for WOW, at a much later date. Well, Torchlight is NOT going to be heavily voice-acted, NOT have cut-scenes, and NOT have a lot of the stuff some other AAA action-RPG's will have. It's not going to be super-duper-long, either -- 10-20 hours out the box does sound very fair for $20. But, that SDK....that's really going to keep Torchlight (SP) going, if people decide to adopt it. It also looks quite extensive for those who want to do some action-RPG mods, too. Given the easy-to-use nature that SDK has written on it and how easily moddable it is -- even to say have a modder make a new game within this thing -- I can see this alone might sell the game.

I'd agree with that. A LOT of people have fun modding and making games for themselves and others. If it's a good tool and catches on, that in itself will shift a lot more copies of the game.
It certainly wasn't the single player campaign game that sold NWN1, after all...

I sure hope it does catch on. I'm looking forward to Torchlight -- especially for the SDK. It was the MP and SDK, if you ask me. NWN: OC would've been better, if they could've taken way more time to fleshed-ou the ancient alien race revival story. I liked the Aribeth and Fenthick vs. City of Neverwinter stuff. NWN's SP side didn't get great until the release of Hordes.

Agreed. NWN: OC would've been better if they hadn't included it at all. That game was just BAD!
I think the biggest problem with the entire run of NWN1 was that the designers made a really critical error: they forgot that AD&D is a system deliberately designed for use by a minimum of four characters and a 'perfect' group size of six. Each character class is balanced so it can't do everything but MUST work as part of a team. That's the entire point of the game. Then they try to do 'Diablo-Lite' with it...
Hordes was the best of the bunch, and I did enjoy it, but none of them came close to the BG series, IMO.

Hey cool, I just noticed that Matt Uelman, who did the music for the Diablo games, is composing the score for Torchlight.

Hey cool, I just noticed that Matt Uelman, who did the music for the Diablo games, is composing the score for Torchlight. Yes. And it should be noted, Runic is made up of a good deal of ex-Diablo dev's (from Blizzard), ex-Fate makers, and ex-Flagship makers (HGL and Mythos).
