I sure blame them. Not for resigning in itself but for all of them resigning immediately at the same time. If you're a police you have a responsibility towards society, and this is no way to uphold that responsibility. They need to at least work until they've found replacements.
It's not as bad as if they were doctors, but nearly.

They won 10 mio pound, that's ~10.9 mio euro - devided by 15 that is seriously not enough money to retire!
I don't blame them for it from a society-role model point of view though, it's not like everyone who became a police officer did it out of ideology, a good bunch does it because it is a valued job, something one can be proud of, the same reason why people become doctors, lawyers and pilots.

has anyone noticed that there are some scary photo's on that page?  As for the lottery win, I can see why they did it, as well as reasons why they did the right thing. After all, an almost millionaire police officer is going to be a fairly large target. |

That's slightly over one million u.s. dollars to each. That's probably enough for some American's to retire on, so I'm going to guess in Hungry that's more than enough.
The only real problem there is that they all left so quickly, leaving their precinct undermanned.

Well from that money you really can't live.. imagine they buy a house, a fairly pretty one, that's half of the money gone. Hungary isn't so far away from here and I can tell everyone, it isn't that much cheaper than other parts of Europe. A one room flat costs about as much as anywhere here (up to 250€)
Anyway, to the topic of leaving all together - Did the article say what part of Hungary? The crime rate in the country is lower than the UK's or Germany's for example. They have more trouble with prostitution than with serious crimes, so if this force came from a teeny tiny part of nowhere, they probably didn't have heaps of work anyway.

You'd definitely know much better than I would about the cost of living in Hungary. ;D From the article, it says it's in the the town of Budaors, which according to Wikipedia has a grand total of about 26,400 people. That makes it a small town, so it shouldn't be too much trouble that all the police officers resigned. Besides, they'll probably get replaced very soon. Of course, this would be a crisis if it happened in Budapest... ;D |

Placed at a 5% interest rate, they would get over 36 000 euros yearly in interests revenue nonetheless; enough to live on if you don't have dreams of luxury.

Most people that win the lottery and aren't used to much money, go bonkers when they have it.
And that they quit their jobs by getting only under a million each, shows that they obviously didn't think too much about it.

A one room flat costs about as much as anywhere here (up to 250€) You might not be able to live a luxurious life on that kind of money, but say they earn £5000 a month (quite a big check in sweden) then they can live for 11 years before the money runs out. And that's ignoring the interest. If you're 50+ you could certanly retire on that kind of money. ...better yet: what Fille said. ;D They'd not only not have to work, they'd increase their paycheck seven time over. Unless you do go bonkers this kind of money is more than enough to retire on. Übereil |
