LaFille's comment in the 9/11 thread made me think of historic moments in my life, which will remain engraved in my memory.
Not all of them are of global significance, but then that's normal, as it's also a personal experience - which again triggers the question, which were yours? Mine were:
- the 1968 invasion of Czeckeslovakia by the Warsaw pact (my mother in tears (she's born in Prague) and the cold feeling that this might be the beginning of another European war)
- the first man on the moon in 1969 (noe that was a good one)
- the 1973 oil crisis (For some weeks, driving cars on Sundays was forbidden in Germany) a strange feeling of emptiness on the roads. Very peculiar.
- 1989, when the German Democratic Republic opened up its borders and the Wall fell. A very emotional moment in Germany, and a very suspenseful time until the re-unification of Germany - something my generation grew up considering an utopia unreasonably upheld by the elder generation. Yes, we were wrong, and I'm glad we were.
- 9/11/2001 - a deep impact

The day I felt most lonely in my whole live ... it is engraved into my brain forever. Nothing will be able to cease this wound, only death.
That was the night of the premiere of a famous movie.
Something went terribly wrong.
Money was collected for the tickets. Somehow the paper never reached me so I never had a chance to sign. This was a some months before the event.
Somehow I found out about it. It turned out that some people had signed, but didn't fulfill their duty - paying.
That remaint so until the very evening.
I got the ticket of one of them who hadn't shown up for months. He hadn't payed, so we (the one organizing it) and I agreed I could have it.
The very evening this person suddenly appeared, and demanded his ticket. Although he had never payed so far.
I gave in, and he got his ticket. I was left alone.
Having waited about 16 years for the arrival of that movie, I found myself outside, around midnight, realizing everyone I know were enjoying this movie, while I was standing outside, slowly going home.
That was the premiere night of Star Wars Episode I.
I never felt more lonely my whole life.

I know you wouldn’t believe it from my posts, but I’m really a cold, numb, kind of person except when it comes to injustice to others.
That said, these moments are forever ingrained in my mind, but they didn’t directly affect or change me or anything. They are in no particular order.
Nixon's Impeachment. (I still today, consider him one of our best Presidents we had)
Carters win over Ford for Presidency. I wanted Ford to win.
The gas situation here in America while Carter was President.
Columbia Space Shuttle Explosion
Mount St. Helens erupting
Ronald Regan and “The Star Wars Program”
Germany unification
Paul McCartney plays in Red Square
Ronald Reagan goes after Kadafi
Howard Cosell (he just made me laugh)

- The second referendum for the indepencence of Quebec in 1995I think that the article can describe well how it was... there had been so much tension, it was something so big and it ended up so peculiarly... - The floods in Saguenay in 1996I was in the area at that time. Again, shaking images; about the forces of nature, ambition and nature of man. Also about a wonderful sense of community, solidarity and strenght of a people I love dearly. - The ice storm and black out in Northeastern America in 1998Had family in the black triangle. Spectacular images; the real experimenting of how vulnerable we are and how hard it is to survive to winter without electricity. - 9/11/2001 Mostly local history, but still, things that leave their mark. That thread brings so much memories alive...
