It's about 'what we can prove' (Colombus) vrs 'what we think is likely' (Vikings!). Still interesting, though

While I have some doubts as to whether Vikings got that far south and that far inland as West-Virginia, a lot speaks for the American continent having been discovered prior to Columbus - and indeed not just by Vikings.
Notwithstanding that, Columbus' discovery was the one with the most impact - not for nothing it marks the beginning of the new age and the end of medieval times, as it coincided with and triggered developments and a new world view in Europe that became apparent to the 'general public'.
