So, I watched Old Dogs, starring Robin Williams and John Travolta.
And I have mixed feelings. Because in one way, it was great, and in another, it was bad.
Explanation.
The Good: It was hilarious. Williams and Travolta being funny, back and forth. I litteraly lol'd many times and possibly rofl'd.
The Bad: Plot holes and failure at the whole emotional part of the story. Heck, the whole 'story'.
Now, I'm going to elaborate on the bad.
Hmm. Actually, you may want to watch the movie before reading this part, if you were interested already, because I might make you too aware of the faults that the flashing movements of the comedians attempt to distract you from.
1) Its the story of these two old guys who have to take care of some kids. Problem? The kids hardly have a presence in the movie. They're pretty much just a pretense for Robin Williams and John Travolta to go around doing silily things. The old guys go places and do stuff with the kids in the background.
2) Spoiler? Meh, not much of one. This movie would have to have a real plot for anything to be spoiled. So, Seth Green, the serious business associate of the old guys, is sent on business to Japan. Problem? For some reason when he gets there he decides to be a DJ? What?? So now the old guys have to abandon the kids instead of starting a relationship with them because they need to move to Japan themselves to solve the problem? Translation: Seth Green's sudden change of character is pretty much a plot device to cause some needless drama and conflict. For some reason, the mother of the children (who had to leave them with the surprised father for two weeks, who didn't know they existed) when hearing this news cries a river, even though she barely knows the father.
3) More spoiler, but honestly, it doesn't matter. So, a corny dash-what-plot-you-had-aside to give up everything for the kids happens, even though he hardly did anything with the kids. I count one short bonding scene for each.
4) They got carried away with the special effects with John Travolta's pills scene, I found at least. I think others would disagree with me, but I stand by it. They could have done without.
5) Oh yeah, Seth Green comes back into the story later to redeem himself or something. In other words, just an excuse to come back and do some funny stuff. I wish they'd just skip the excuses and just do the funny!
Etc.
I know, I got pretty brutal there. But hey, I still say go for it, watch it. It IS freaking hilarious. Just don't look to closely at whats going on, because there is no point to it at all. Plot FAIL. End.
