It does look big. Some consider the Exxon Valdez spill the biggest man-made environmental disaster and apparently this one could do even worse. Alaska was far to go cleaning, but it would seem that while closer Louisiana's swamps are not much more accessible. We're just beginning to hear about the horrors... Hopefully will that push the powers in place to at least oblige the installation of the security valves that if I understood correctly was not installed there because not obligatory and deemed 'too expensive', costing 500 000$. On the other side, I can imagine Harper & Prentice here having fire in their pants in anticipation to try again to promote their tar sands to the US powers that be.

This is horrific and it's hard to see how they're going to even stop it, much less clean all this up. I just hope someone, somewhere comes up with a bright idea soon...

Very soon!
The Gulf of Mexico, as well as the North Sea, are plastered with oil rigs.
This was bound to happen some time.
Risk management and safety are expensive - and insurances cover only money.
This - as well as the volcano on Iceland - has shown how vulnerable we are, and how dependent on forces we can't control.
