Hello, everyone.
Well, Peter might actually know them, but I just heard them last Sunday night.
They were the "supporting act" of a Mr. David Rhodes, known as long-time guitarrist for Peter Gabriel and thers.
Paintbox - they have imho quite a unique style of music, but live it sounded a bit different than on the CD, which is imho not quite surprising.
Their CD is difficult to come by. This is their "My space" page with few excerpts, and snippets from their current CD : www.myspace.com/paintboxpaintbox
Update: I just found iout that they appear to come from Sverige/Sweden.
Their next tour dates outside of Germany (to be seen from the my space page linked above) are :
I believe everyone here should check them out, so to say, because they have imho quite a good and unique mixture of pop and more "progressive rock"-like sounds.
My "report" of that small concert is the fololowing, I have quoted myself from a different board :
List night I attended a tiny concert by Mr. David rhodes. He has been a long-time guitar player for Mr. Peter Gabriel - and for many, many others.
His latest album has now appeared in CD form, which hadn't been available this far. Therefore this tour. For ssupporting it.
I didn't need to pay anything for it, although it was suggested to pay at least a small sum of money for support. since I was on the luist of receivers of the newsletter of the official German Genesis fan club, I could go into the tin concert for free. But I payed a few Euros - the other money I put into two CDs I bought there. More of that later.
I think I can say that it was clear from moment 1 on that he is a professional, and in my opinion (as far as i can judge this, since I'm not familiar with guitar playing at all, aside from having learned the basics around the turn of the 1980s/1990s) he is quite a good guitar player.
What struck me most was his ability - well, before that I must say that he came into the tiny hall as a one-man-band - that he was able to record some of his basic play from the beginning through one (to me) unknown device, and then was able to replay this in a loop as his own background guitar playing. you know, chords, background melodies and these things that are usually repeated over and over again.
Thus, he was able to have his own background "play".
Although I must say that i don't like music which *entirely* consists of guirars *alone* that much, i must admit that he was able top perform it with quite a variety. He did have some interesting ideas and some good stories to tell. I don't know, what he made all this all lone, but i think it was purposely decided to do this, since two other supporters will support him on two or three later concerts 8one being in Berlin, one being in Hamburg, if i recall this correctly).
He is a humble man, not without his fine jokes and a fine humour. He struggled a few times with this technology, and once called it "fine German technology", with a bit of a tongue-in-cheek humour.
I guess he might not have been that familiar with using all of this technolgy *alone*. Maybe he even never made a tour as a one-man-band ?
But what struck me I think most was his "supoporting act". They call themselves "Paintbox". It's a small (3 people) band from Denmark I think, who do some kind of ... interesting music. Too complex to become a pop song, but too much pop to become real "progressive rock". Uh; it's quite hard for me to describe their kind of music. Think of a mixture of Mike Oldfield, current Coldplay and maybe a few bits of early Genesis thrown in as spice.
Perhaps you get their music style a little bit better from here : www.myspace.com/paintboxpaintbox
They *can* sound like pop music - but *then* they throw in elements which are not pop. Often rather unexpected. Imho.
I bought the current CDs of both - of Mr. Rhodes and of Paintbox. The paintbox members even signed the Cds, then.
And of course keep in mind that live played songs often sound a bit different from their stuio recorded counterparts.
I cannot find Mr. Rhodes' CD on www.amazon.com . So far, I can only find it here : www.amazon.de/Bittersweet-David-Rhodes/dp/B003JVIB8K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1272889150&sr=8-2
Suimilar things are there for the current Paintbox CD : www.amazon.de/Bright-Gold-Red-Paintbox/dp/B001PRRTMY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1272889171&sr=1-2
So, if anyone here wants to have the CD, I can try ordering it, and send it via Mail. Be warned: It wouldn't be cheap, though.

Here, too (official) : www.myspace.com/davidrhodesbittersweet
(Besides, he did seem to have his birthday yesterday - on the 2nd of May, 2010. Some suddenly began singing "happy birthday" after his concert had come to an end.)
So, all in all, it has been a very nice evening/night !
Edit : Mr. Rhodes CD is available in digital format ... But only through some sort of club ? blog.bowers-wilkins.com/
