I got it! I finally got it! After two years of waiting I stood in line at midnight to buy the book. Now, being as we're an hour ahead of England the book wasn't released till 1 am but it's good I got there early. There must've been a good 100 people waiting and I got mine pretty quick. Now I'm off to read - welcome to the offical thread!

I just read it - and what a fantastic read. Best book of the series! I'll keep comments very short, as I have plans I need to attend - but damn! Well, I just finished reading it and a fantastic read - the end, as hec said in another thread, is truly epic!
Fitting end, some of my predictions were true, as Harry being the last horcrux, Dumbledore not being as innocent as presumed, Snape being on the side of good and agreeing to protect Harry and harry having to die (well, kinda) while others clearly misfired
Very great end - and I'm damn happy it worked out for the best!!

Amidst all the emotion and excitement of the release of the last book, we should not forget the REAL reason behind the books: TO CORRUPT OUR CHILDREN! Ah, Jack. You never dissapoint.

...Still waiting for a certain Dane's comments, here... ;D Hector, I think the image links don't work either (the files were apparently removed or put elsewhere)... So there is disappointment and no corruption, instead... ;D

So there is disappointment and no corruption, instead... ;D You're one demanding woman, Fille.. I'll get to my comment when I have a break from work and can actually muster some coherent thoughts I'm kinda tired tonight and am running on the reserves. In the meanwhile why dontcha comment yourself

Why, because I didn't read it yet, that's why. ;D I know just too well how much I'm not one in position to push on people for delays and regarding business, but... I just wanted to be sure you remembered. ;D And put some quick action in here by the same way. I can comment on the covers, however... Which I find that are nice in all cases so far, the UK version for children and the version for adults and the US edition. I don't know which one I like best though; and obviously can't tell which one seems to fit the spirit of the story best. The US and UK covers seem to hint to a darker kind of story while the UK one for kids hints to a pretty different tone. On this last one, the cover picture reminds me a bit of some Conan works by John Howe. ;D

I was thinking of buying the book, we only have it in the english version here, the Dutch version will come in October or so. But seeing the cover of that book, the children version Fille showed, I find it soo ugly I didn't wanna buy it at all! I hope the Dutch version will have a better cover, all my other books do.

Just finished....Not a bad book certainly worthy of the series. Even if to me it seemed a bit fragmented, still well done to R.K. for ending the series well. And of course choosing to end it where she did. She could easily flogged this story arc to death (no pun intended) but she chose a nice place and time to finish what is a wonderfully written story...(even if its not quite dark enough for my liking).

I read this book in less that 24 hours and that included 10 hours of work...I didnt sleep much. The book was phenomenal though, I always fear the last part of an epic series as something is always left out or not done the way I had hoped...in this case there were only couple of very minor things that bothered me phenomenal ending to a phenomenal series.

I was worried she would be really tired and just do a bad job trying to end the serious.
But it was good. I read it in about 6 hours I think.

I didn't fancy having to wait between books so I bought all seven once the last one was released. I read them over a period of about a week and a half, and couldn't put them down (course except when I had to It couldn't really have gone any other way, but I did find the ending a little too Hollywood.

i wasn't that thrilled with the ending myself grape. like you said it was a hollywood ending. i also felt like if harry was going to name one of his sons after snape, then she should have had more given more time to changing harry's feelings before he died. it would have made more sense than to spend so much of the book on things that just didn't matter and really didn't add that much to the story.

Well, I've found that the best way to avoid spoilers of a movie/book is to not go into threads dedicated to discussing said movie/book. Especially after it has been released...

DO NOT READ — SPOILERS BELOWYeah, it seemed like she spent much of the ending wrapping up loose ends, only one of which was Harry's change of feelings for Snape, giving the end a rushed, insubstantial feeling at times. And like you say, many of the loose ends didn't really add to the story — they could have been resolved any time and not had an effect on the main storyline — but they have even less an effect when resolved that late on. And a lot of them just add to the Hollywoodness, like Neville's triumph, Ron and Hermione's finally snogging, Percy coming around, etc. Along the same lines as the rushed loose-end wrap-up were the few deaths of secondary "good guy" characters. They aren't really a meaningful part of the story but just a lame, obvious attempt at striking some balance and making it seem like good guys actually can be harmed. She even manages to preserve Harry's innocence by not having him send his own Avada Kedavra at Voldemort. Pretty weak if you ask me. Oh, sure he uses the Cruciatus curse near the end and takes enjoyment from it, but this seems to fall into the same category of devices as the good-guy deaths: a blatant balancing act thrown in at the end rather than a real conflict within the character. I'm not saying I didn't like it... as a Hollywoodian sort of thing it was great! But a little more depth and complexity couldn't have hurt it.
