They've changed alot about the game since I started playing and I think that most of what you hated has probably been changed (unless it was the people). SOE is now trying to get their customer service up to scratch. I think the two major problems I had were slow-downs in large areas, especially the Wood Elf city, and then the people playing. You can never change the idiots who play the game, but it's good to hear they've gotten better with their servers. I guess I just got tired of dying too many times just by crossing over into a new area to find myself amidst a crowd of angry monsters and the server being so slow that I can't cross back before I die. That and not wanting to pay to keep playing. I'd rather buy the solo RPGs - pay once and never have to deal with stupid people and still get a good game.

About the only thing that is the same as the game you played is that there are still some morons. But they are now all in the planes or beyond and so you should never meet them.

I almost bought some solo EverQuest games for my PocketPC, but I never have time to play games when I'm out and they were more expensive. So I bought a cheap hack 'n slash to keep my occupied when I do have time to play games.

I got back into Champions of Norrath. Took me a while to remember where I was, but once I got back in, it sure was fun hacking those undead to pieces. And I just added fire to my weapon, so it was really cool to see them catch fire and burn. mwahaha! I'm such a good cleric. take that, you evil undead monsters!

I don't care for them too much, but they'll probably be up your alley. I much prefer the games from Working Designs. Can't wait to get the Growlansers set, but that'll be a while. It's still $50.

Yeah, cursed FFX is really getting to me... ;D Even the ball game I started out hating has a peculiar allure... Nothing like taking a no-hope team and making them into champions The scary thing is - i'm not sure I'm even half way through it yet...

*Tries to remember the half-way point of FFX*
So E where are you in the game? I can tell if you're there or not. I will say something though if you only have 5 characters in your party you aren't half-way yet.
Anyhow here are a couple tips (if you want them. Ignore if you choose to because they may contain spoilers):
-Ignore Blitzball. I hated it and found it way too frustrating to play. The only point of the game seems to be to get Wakka's ultimate weapon, and since I never used Wakka I found it pointless. Though you're welcome to play it of course if you like it.
-Get Bribe as soon as you can! There are some enemies that you can bribe and get rare spheres for the sphere board like level 3 and 4 keyspheres! Obtaining the extra AP and gil will also help later. Though as a rule of thumb from my experiences try to get bribe before the calm lands or get close. I usually get Kimhari bribe as there's one battle that only he participates in and it helps to have steal and bribe.
-Final tip. In the calm lands there's alot of stuff to do. Try going to the monster arena on the right side, if you do that mini quest you get some great customization items and something else that I'll let you discover on your own.
But back to non spoiler stuff. I found 10 to be good. It's no 7 but it definetly is one of the top 3 in the series. I loved the battle system and sphere grid (just about beats out the Materia system IMO) but the story was sort of lackluster IMO. And of course let's not forget the music. Classic. I enjoyed the rock-themed tracks alot.

I'm half way up mount cataphract, or whatever it's called. How do I open the chest that the arena guy gives you in the Calm Lands? Right now, i'm assuming I'll get to travel back through most of the lands I've already visited at some stage... Which will allow me to get Yojimbo, the greedy swine Aeon, apart from anything else

Woah! You're very far! To open the chest in the highlands you need to buy some capture weapons and catch all the monsters in the calm lands. Beware some of them are rare. In the chest IIRC is a part of Yuna's ultimate weapon. Also if you catch more monsters from different areas you'll unlock creatures called area creations which are pretty tough, plus you'll get good customization items. Like ones that give double AP (like Megalixers) and one MP cost. Some of the items require that you catch multiples of a monsters (like 20 Tonberrys for a bunch of Megalixers).

What put me off of 7 was the art in the game. looks dreadful. I definitely like 10 so far, though.

They certainly weren't ;D
Mediocre graphics I have never minded in the interests of a good game - but FF7 just made me wince...
