I'm pretty sure that the Aussies will test the blood they got too. It can take up to a week, but if they have overstock right now, and need to throw 1/3 away from the donated blood, they still have enough to cover it

These fires remind me of Greece and of the U.S. ... And most worrying, there had been people in some places starting these fires ... Who knows why ?
Of one case I read where a dropped cigarette has ignited such a fire somewhere in Australia ...

HEF, glad u're ok. hope others in Oz are doing alright too. things are really weird. with one side burning while the other submerged in water. i hope things will get better on both sides soon.

Of one case I read where a dropped cigarette has ignited such a fire somewhere in Australia ... Those 3 places are environments where forest fires are part of the natural cycles (IIRC it's called a Mediterranean biome, though I'm not sure if the Oz one is one of its own); some tree seeds even need that to germinate or need the kind of evironment that follows a fire to thrive, and as such the mature trees are (evolutionarily-speaking) purposely easily flammable. It doesn't excuse the crimes, but explains some why it always comes back and why it tends to go out of control more than elsewhere...

i have an Aussie colleague who said the same thing, Fille. the forest/bush fires being part of the land's natural cycles. this time it's extra bad cos there hasn't been one for quite a while & u have forests & such growing all around. these become fuel for the bush fires.

excuse my nerdiness... There are 5 regions with 'Mediterranean' climate on Earth - the others being in California, Chile, South Africa and Australia. Common factor? - they all grow excellent wines! While fires are a natural cycle in many wooded parts of the world, Spain, France and Greece have a number of instances where this is used as an 'excuse' to start fires artificially for the purpose of land speculation (Both to make room for new building as well as to deteriorate a competive owner's land).

I was wondering where you vanished too, rhiian; good luck with the exams! On forest fires, they're common here too in the north, but with the fires in Greece a year or 2 ago it was the first time I heard about those forest fires for land speculation (or perhaps even pyromaniac acts now). I know that in California they used to do "preventive burning" (don't know if the speculation thing was happening there as well) and that setting some land on fire for agricultural purposes is done in a few places in the world, but otherwise all I knew were natural or accidental cases. It's scary.

we're fortunate here in Malaysia as we didn't have any haze last year, unlike previous years. i guess the Indonesian governments have somehow done something to reduce blatant forest/plantation fire, which sadly is (wish that's past tense) a common practice here to clear the land for another round of plantation.

For the OSCAR prize, Germany had sent the movie "Der Baader-Meinhof-Komplex" into the race - a movie about Germany's most dangerous terror group in the 70s and early 80s.
Now I just read in another forum about a woman who had seen this movie, is interested in getting to know the backgrounds, and therefore connected herself with a kind of interest group - a "network", as she wrote.
A lost relative whom she had met only a few months ago is now threatening her that she should tel that she "doesn't think so" and is willing to tell the U.S. Homeland Security about her and that she is a danger for the person's country (the U.S.). The person also forbid her to contact ANY of the persons relatives again.
She doesn't know why she received this rather aggressive message, but she says this can only be because she said she was conneting herself with this interest network.
I bet the person hasn't even seen the movie and doesn't even want to.

(I also doubt that, if shown in North America at all, it'd be succesfull) The events in question were before your time - this may help: German Autumn
