This is something I wanted to create since a very long time. I have the impression that in the Music subforum, we keep throwing music suggestions at eachother without getting the real response we wanted. We give suggestions and proclaim about the music we like very much. But because of the sheer amount of those suggestions here we rarely can take the time to at least listen once to them all.
What I want to try is the following. Someone starts with suggesting a single song. The following posters takes his/her time to really listen to it, read the lyrics if suggested and then formulates his true opinion about the song. He/she ends with posting a new suggestion for a song for the next poster to listen to, a song that he/she wants the rest to hear and wants to know others' opinion about.
You have to formulate a decent opinion on the song you listened to. Nothing in the likes of "Nice song. Now listen to THIS!" Only in that way we can truly believe that at least someone listened to the song we wanted the whole world to know about.
All music can be posted ofcourse, the more death metal fans that try out techno songs and vice versa the better. The more opera fans that try out country and the more rednecks that put on classical music...even better ;D If you want to break down a song that you don't like, do it. But only do so after listening to it, not because of prejudice against the music genre, the performing artist or anything in the likes.
I hope people will appreciate this idea. The first one who is up for this can start with posting a song.

When I Look At You by Miley Cyrus Hey...that's something different than what I am used of Miley Cyrus. Ofcourse I didn't expect a teenage girl song to be suggested by Elliot (or did I? ;D), but this still suprised me in the good way. I liked the beginning of both the song and the music video a lot. To me it has a sort of epic soundtrack-like athmosphere that I like very much. I also adore Miley Cyrus' voice, both speaking and singing. I didn't like the music video anymore when the guy came in it, Miley alone is enough for me ^^ The lyrics...they are both the same generic love song lyrics like hundreds of them before and... true. It really depends on what mood you are in when you listen to them. I can both listen to the same song with and without paying attention to the lyrics. And sometimes, when I do pay attention to them, these generic lyrics can actually move me. It's not a song that I would listen to on my mp3 player, while concentrating on the music. But it would be a great song to listen to while driving, preferably at night, to get in a perfect relaxed mood. I never care for the artist behind the song. Not for what he/she does, not from where he/she comes from, not for how the particular song was made. I heard people say before that Miley Cyrus is a "made" artist, a spoiled brat that can't sing and that she doesn't make "real" music. Well what do I care? I just heard a pretty fine song by her, I liked listening to it for a few times and I will like it again if it comes on the radio. I hope this enough for you, Elliot? If anyone wants to take over, here's the next one: Blue October - Hate Me. You don't have to pay attention to the music video for me. But you do have to pay attention to the lyrics. Don't read the youtube comments, but try to make up for yourself what the lyrics are about. This is a pretty damn hard song...

I'm impressed you actually watched the video, Hildor! I just put the song on as background while I'm doing something else. I chose this song quite deliberately, because it defeats a lot of expectations people who are not Miley fans have of her singing. Firstly, because it's so obvious from this that she CAN sing, secondly because it sounds nothing like a Hannah Montana song and thirdly because 'Power Ballad' is not a term anyone would associate with her, despite The Climb. So it seemed like a great start I'll leave your song for a few days to give someone else a chance to join in...

Too much smoothing on her voice, makes it sound computer made. A song like that need soul in the singing, and the smoothing takes that away. Rare to hear a song in 3/4 though. All in all the song was decent. Too generic to stick though. Hate Me requires me to get the lyrics to acually give it a fair review, I suspect. So I'll check it out more throughoutly tomorrow. Hate Me revisited: I'm not quite sure what to make of this song. The lyrics are quite good. Well crafted, honest and meaningful. The first verse might have been a little overdone but the second one kind of makes them grow. Yet I don't really feel anything about the song because of the music. The arrangement is uninteresting. And the voice effect with one low pitchand one high pitch doesn't work. The song is supposed to be a heart on sleave emotional song, and the overdub makes the emotions in the singing to go away. The end result only makes me feel alienated. Next Song. I wonder what Elliot thinks about this.Übereil

Miley Cyrus... Okay , more generic pop music ...not good pop but plastic run of the mill sap. Blue October I've heard this song a ton on corporate radio. It's just okay, the performance of the lyics is so flat and uninspired , it has a decent melody though I guess. My son likes it, he has their album. I am surpirsed by the oft run of the mill radio friendly music some of you guys like. I see absolutly nothing beyond empty calories with most of this. I'm not gonna do all of 'em, just the one previous to me - I didn't watch the video, just listened. Clutch - Burning Beard: First of all, great energy. Bluesy, southern hard rock, kinda frantic feeling. Nice crazy noise guitar solo. They ride some of the riffs too long though, making a 4 minute song seem longer than it is - like that main riff and the 'verse' riff. The lyrics are the high point. They're 50% interesting imagery: Beams of darkness streak across the sky Pink rays from the ancient satellite Every time I look out my window same three dogs looking back at me Every time I open my windows cranes fly in to terrorize me and 50% bland stuff: Choking on bits of barley bread crumbs Oh, this burning beard, I have come undone It's just as I've feared. I have, I have come undone Best thing on the list so far, but it doesn't evoke any emotions, guitar riffs are not good enough to be repeated so much, and the music does not display much creativity (the lyrics do though). The singer is pretty good even if he stays in one vocal area the whole time. I could enjoy this band live. Amorphis - Majestic Beast and the Lyrics

F'ing browser crash dumping my post! Ahem... Ugh! I hate guttural vocals. The music itself is alright, though nothing inventive or challenging. It sounds manufactured and predictable, too alike to so many other songs. I'm coining a new sub-genre here: Death Pop. I could listen to this on the radio if I was in the mood, but I wouldn't go out of my way to hear it. Teargas & Plateglass, Simplify this Landscape with DarknessI hope this isn't too long for people.

I have no idea what the song's about (because I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics), but this song is a lot of fun. It makes my legs bounce. It makes for good background music. I think that's what I'm after right now as I'm at work. Anything that consumes too much of my mind listening to it makes it harder to work. I'd rate it 3/5, good for casual listening.

I think this is pretty good actually, the lyrics are sort of vikingesque/mythic. I always like when metal goes from kinda gutteral to soaring with vocal melody and keyboards during the chorus.

Burning Beard was pretty good. Had a minor problem with the verse rythm, since I was listening to it in the background while browsing on and my mind kept falling out of the rythm. It was good, but nothing that made me think "hey, I need to check those guys out more throughoutly". The Amorphis song was slightly more interesting. Like HEF I'm no fan of growling, and I agree on the Death Pop. But I don't agree that it's that generic. The arrangement is interesting and well made, and they don't overdo the pop elements which gives it the song a melodic edge without losing the sincerity or rawness. I've listened to some more song and I've liked what I've heard so far (less growling too ). I am surpirsed by the oft run of the mill radio friendly music some of you guys like. I see absolutly nothing beyond empty calories with most of this. You missed my song... Then again, you've heard two songs (unless you just didn't review mine) so it's a bit soon to completely dismiss our music taste as "empty calories". The Blue October song did have lyrics that were more than just words. Übereil

The Blue October song did have lyrics that were more than just words. Seconded. Justin's words are oft the only thing that keeps me going. They matter because it's more real that what is often seen in modern music today. imo.

Blue October - Hate Me: This has a pretty good verse. I like the subdued, melancholy feel and the vocal melody. I do not like the chorus one little bit. "Hate me todayyyeeeeee" Up until that point it was an ok melancholy rock song; at that point it became emo in the worst way. Ultimately the song bores me and kind of grates on my nerves by the end because I can no longer relate to the overly-angsty teenage vibe this song exudes. I possibly may have liked this in high school though. I know, things like sobriety and relationships are big, "real" problems, but the approach in this song is so kiddie drama.
White Lies - Farewell to the Fairground: It's the 80's with modern production! This is actually alright. Not my kind of music at all, but that damn chorus is catchy. Actually going in for a second listen. I don't like the singer, and I don't like the synthetic sound of some of the instruments, but I do like the imagery of the lyrics and the vocal melodies, and that chorus.

I possibly may have liked this in high school though. I know, things like sobriety and relationships are big, "real" problems, but the approach in this song is so kiddie drama. You almost completely voice my opinion. But I keep liking the song just for the verses. I am surpirsed by the oft run of the mill radio friendly music some of you guys like. I see absolutly nothing beyond empty calories with most of this. You're right, it is empty calories. But sometimes I just like to listen to a cheap funny tune. I would never call those songs works of art. And neither will I still listen to them within three years. But for the moment, I like them. There isn't that much high quality music (not even in the oh so great classical music genre for me). So I keep things in balance with listening to some fancy tunes once in a while for 3 minutes of enjoyment. Just like with many "electronic" music songs (I am very bad at recognising genres) I didn't like the intro at all. I didn't bother looking at the music video either, but what I saw of it looked like the generic music visualisation that I don't like. Now onto the better part: the rest of the song...was great! Not for concentrated listening but the more for background music while surfing the net and driving. Electronic music, no matter what genre, has to be either catchy (making you say: "go party now") or very relaxing (making you say: "go sleep now") for me. This is neither of both. This song says "get yourself a longdrink and enjoy your time". Brb for Ubereil's suggestion, I'm getting myself a longdrink! A difficult one. I have listened to this kind of music too much three or four years ago. And my view of this genre hasn't grown either when I found out that I hate many of its fans that praise it like the only genre there should be and their festival mentality (nothing against you though Ubereil, I know you're not like the people I mean. I'm talking about people from my direct neighbourhood) Anyway, I didn't like the song because it just didn't stick to my mind. If it ends I immedeately forget how it went and that 's a bad thing. If it would play on the radio, I wouldn't skip it. But I wouldn't listen to it a second time. To continue, something classical: Pachelbel - Canon in D. There are many versions of that piece to be found, but I find this the best one.

I like it, it reminds me of my childhood. I like that it also has actual music rather than just synths. Makes me think of something one might have heard on the DONNIE DARKO soundtrack . Really good , I'm listening to it again now, heard it this morning but had to get to work by 6 and just got home. I am a musician though I find it hard to express musical ideas with technical terms , I will say though that I can make equations , I like martin gore too.

I think they had at least four albums in a row that were only clean singing. The singer you're hearing on that track is a recent addition and IMO he breathed new life into the band. That Blood Ceremony track rocks! I wish I had time to listen to all of it right now. Reminds a bit of Jex Thoth and something else, with that folky, flute sound going. May expand this more later, have to go meet friends now.
