OK, time for chapter 12. Chapter 12 - Silver and OpalsI really didn't find to much in this chapter that was of real interest to me. It seemed more like a fill chapter. It talked mostly about their first trip of the year into Hogsmeade. So Harry has adventured into try out some of the Prince's self invented spells. Looks like the Prince was into creating joke spells. (toenails to grow really fast, glued tongue to roof of mouth, and one to cause buzzing in people's ears so they couldn't over hear conversations) Even Ron was the victim of one of Harry's adventures. How would you like to have woken up hanging upsidedown in mid air? ;D Harry also remembers how his dad had used the spell on Snape. One thing that Harry doesn't seem to want to tell Ron and Hermione. Hooray for Harry, he's busy again and doesn't have to attend Slughorne's party. So he's been purposefully scheduling team practice on those nights so he wouldn't have to go. And this time it is Dumbledore to the rescue. I wonder if Slughorne's suspects anything? Probably not. He seems to caught up in his own thing. Seems like Mundungas is stealing things from the Black house or someone is stealing them and giving or selling them to Mundungas because Harry catches him with a piece from there. I wonder what he has taken. Could it be something important that we wouldn't think about. Will this play a part in the next book? What is Tonks doing there? Did she know the stuff was being taken. It didn't seem to bother her when she found out. I don't think so. I think she just has other stuff on her mind right now. Mainly Lupin. I guess the biggest thing to me about this chapter was what happened to Katie Bell. Who had given her the package? Why were they trying to sneak it into Hogwarts? Who was she suppose to delver the necklace to? Must be some powerful magic attached to that necklace. It sure did a job on Katie. Harry still thinkd Malfoy is responsible. Is he? He had a good alibi. He was serving detention with McGongal. Had he gotten in trouble with her on purpose to try to keep from becoming a suspect? No matter what, Harry is still convinced Malfoy is behind everything and that he used an accomplice to help with the necklace. Like I said, I didn't find much that was of real interest to me in this chapter. Did I miss something important Tragic?

I was about to start the next chapter...well Shan beat me to it! Chapter 12 Curiosity has always been in Harry's nature, im not surprised he tried out one of the spells on Ron. Hermione im not surprised dissapproves of any apparent rule breaking and doesnt like being second best,i suppose its natural to feel jealous...but being the best all the time isnt good for you. I am beginging to see why Slughorn was in Slytherin..while he is not a "pure blood maniac" as the rest he does have a snobbish tendency, such is his treatment of Ron. I am begining to hate the man. Dung and Tonks were interesting features in this chapter... I wasnt surprised to see Dung nicking Sirius's stuff but what was he doing in Hogsmeade...surely London would be a better location to sell stuff...interesting that. Now Tonks seems to appear out of nowhere(again). cant help feel she is on some special assignment plus she seems to know where Dung is going....hmmm The lousy day in Hogsmeade is evidence of the doom and gloom spreading in the wizarding world. I was wondering when we would have some info on Grawp... ;D The Katie incident is interesting but the attack makes little sense unless Katie had some enemies. I think Harry is right to tell McGonagall but she seems to be certain that there is no proof, but Malfoy missing homework is i think quite unlike him, he is planning something!!

I read the Dmbledore is not dead post and while i admit i can see where the author is going with it, his own theory has a few flaws.
1) The wand thing...when a student is expelled(like hagrid) its snapped in two.
When the wizard Odo is dead the wand is snapped in two but we dont know if whilst fighting the wizard is wand was snapped in two during the fight and not after.
So we cant tell if indeed when a wziard dies his wand is snapped in two.
2)I like the theory that Dumbldore was an imposter but it seems a bit far feteched to me, i dont think dumbledore trusted anyone enough to show Harry his memories or Riddle's memories..after all he mentioned that knowing about Riddle's past is important..so it makes sense that he and only he should be show Harry these memories.
3)The last one about some text being in US version and not UK version has made me slghtly angry... We should all have the same version unless Rowling somehow planned it that way. The fact that she didnt include it(In the UK version) makes me wonder if its important at all.

It seems very far fetched to me too. I just can't go along with that theory. Tragic, what did you think of the painting of Dumbledore in his office after he was supposedly killed? That one didn't make sense to me either. Why would it show him sleeping and not awake? There is just something about all of this stuff at the end that doesn't make sense. Just to many questions around Dumbledore's death that I can't accept it for the way it was written. The thing about the text being different in the UK version and the US version doesn't make sense either. I just don't get why there would be a difference. Shan

Were the US and UK versions released at the same date? And would there be other differences like that than this excerpt in the book, or in the previous ones? As for Dumby sleeping in the painting, maybe does it have no special meaning; the images of the people have a kind of life on their own in the pictures even when they're alive... ? I wonder if the person really has to be dead for his painting to appear in the director's office (the b*tch woman from the 5th book doesn't have hers there even though she has been director; but maybe that this has to do with some other procedure related to the way she got the job ). But that makes me think, the portrait of Dumby could verry well happen to be a way that he'll intervene in the seventh book to help Harry out... !

Shan: I took it that Dumby was indeed dead, but the painting was sleeping. It mentions all the previous heads but not whether they were alive or dead...hmmmmm La Fille: I was really angry when that text was in the US version and not the UK version..i think thats the only difference but who knows. Chapter 13I can see why Phineas was unpopular...he sounds more like a dictator than a headmaster!! I really want to know more about Dung, why is he so loyal to Dumby?? I dont know how relevant this is to the main plot(if at all) but you never know. I found meeting the young Riddle fascinating...its one of those things you cant imagine..i.e the evil Voldy was once a small kid. I wont say he was a pleasant character but he looked so young and good looking...i suppose not everything which shines is gold. I do think that he was a troubled young kid...maybe if he had parents he would have turned out diferently. Hs weariness and rage when Dumby confronts him is understandable and slightly comical. At this age he doesnt seem in control of his emotions and as Dumby later says he was very guarded around him. I have to say Dumby is a very clever person and noticed things which i didnt...the magpie like tendency, the ability to work alone, these will in time i feel become very important. I didnt understand the last part when Harry notices the ring and confronts dumby with it. All in all an interesting chapter.

I bought the DVD of the fourth Harry Potter film. We recently watch them all again and I the fourth is definitely the best even though I wish they hadn't made some of the changes that they did to the story.

Chapter 13 -- or at least a start ;D
Like you said Tragic, I found this to be a very interesting chapter. I enjoy getting to see what Voldemort was like as a kid. It does seem like he had problems even at a very young age. I too wonder if things would have been different for him if things had been different with his parents.
He was a very troubled boy and it seems like one who enjoyed torturing those around him even at that age.
One part that got my attention was this. I don't know exactly what Dumbledore meant by it, but there was just something about it.
"And lastly --- I hope you are not too sleepy to pay attention to this, Harry --- the young Tom Riddle liked to collect trophies. You saw the box of stolen articles he had hidden in his room. These were taken from victims of his bullying behavior, souvenirs, if you will, of particularly unpleasant bits of magic. Bear in mind this magpie-like tendency, for this, particularly, will be important later."
I don' think I got that one either. What did he mean about the mouth organ? Harry said he had expected Dumbledore to have it or something. Why? I really didn't get that sentence either, but he thought Harry was very astute for noticing. This last part left me a little puzzled.

chapter 13
See Harry's parents were pretty decent people..Voldy's not so much..yet both grew up in miserable places...
It can be difficult to decide why they both turned out as they did though..i suppose we may never know!!
Chapter 14 coming on later.
Im working on two new theories but they have major flaws in them..one i reaised just recently so with that i have to re-read book 6.

Chapter 14See this chapter starts with the Ron/Hermione tension...will they wont they get together...come on Ron ask her out!! Harry having feelings for Ginny!! I didnt see this one coming!! I like the comparision with the creature who roars in Harry's chest..but Ginny did get the better of Ron in an argument...i feel Ron is the type of character who like me actually who shouts nonsense when angry or emotionaly disturbed... This wont be good for his confidence though!!! Yes sure enough Ron is in a bad mood the next day while Harry still struggles with his feelings. The match was funny....that Smith is a arghhhhhhhhh I glad Ginny went and collided with him. ;D Harry's pretty clever for fooling Ron like that but its apparent that hes still angry at her for the Krum thing. Ron you idiot!!! Just ask Hermione instead of going out with Lavneder...now i really feel sorry for Hermione

My biggest hope for this book is that Snape will turn out to be a (somewhat) good guy after all by betraying Voldermort in some way. I really hated when he killed Dumbledore, really wasted his entire charactercomplexity...
